Mechanism of Injury
- Typically non-contact pivoting injury:
- Sudden deceleration, cutting, or landing from a jump with valgus stress and external rotation.
- Contact injuries: Direct blow to the lateral knee with the foot planted.

Clinical Presentation
- Sudden “pop” at time of injury.
- Immediate pain and knee instability (“giving way”).
- Rapid swelling due to hemarthrosis.
- Positive Lachman, anterior drawer, and pivot shift tests.
