For installation of a CT scanner, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB, previously AFRB) rules are crucial for safety and compliance in Indian medical facilities.
Key AERB Rules for CT Installation
- Only AERB type-approved CT equipment must be procured, accompanied by a valid NOC and certificate.
- The CT room must have an area not less than 25 m² and dimensions that ensure safe movement and patient positioning.
- Walls, doors, floor, and ceiling must provide structural radiation shielding as per regulatory stipulations; doors must be lead-lined, and a lead-glass viewing window is required
- There must be a separate control console room, located adjacent to the CT scan room.
- Radiation safety signage and warning systems are mandatory, including “Radiation ON” indicators and standard symbols.
- Appointment of a certified Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) is required; radiation exposure monitoring devices must be provided for staff.
- Display of equipment model, radiologist details, fee structure, and safety signage must be visible in the department.
- Regular quality control and maintenance per AERB standards are compulsory.
ALARA
ALARA stands for “As Low As Reasonably Achievable” and is the guiding principle in radiation protection. It requires use of every reasonable effort to minimize radiation exposure to patients and staff—well below set dose limits—by optimizing techniques, equipment, and procedures, considering technological and economic factors.
